CodePink, NRDC Among Winners of Progressive Source Web Advocacy Awards: Judges Choose and Thousands Vote for Best Online Advocacy
NEW YORK (BusinessWire EON) July 25, 2007 -- "The age of progressive advocacy on the Web is just beginning, and it could not come at a more critical time for our democracy," said Jonathan Greenberg, CEO of Progressive Source Communications, which created the Awards. "The Internet revolution is about leveling the playing field for ideas, about going direct to bypass the traditional hierarchal distribution channels of information and news. In recognizing the most effective Web communications work being done today, we hope to create a repository of best practices that can instruct and inspire progressive organizations everywhere."
Two prizes were awarded in each of seven categories. The Judges' Choice Awards were selected by a panel of 12 distinguished professionals; the Most Popular Awards were voted on by the public on the Progressive Source Awards website.
The winners of the Judges' Choice Awards are:
- Best Homepage: Natural Resources Defense Council, http://www.nrdc.org
- Best Microsite: Environmental Defense Fund, http://fightglobalwarming.com
- Best Keyword Ad Campaign: Protect Police/Mayors Against Illegal Guns, http://progressivesourceawards.com/Judd/images/gun_control.mht

- Best Organization of Resources: The Southern Poverty Law Center, http://www.splcenter.org/intel/map/hate.jsp
A three-way tie for the Judge's Choice Award in the "Call-to-Action" Web video category reflects the impressive quality of work in this fast-growing field. "Over half a million people have viewed the movie and thousands of people have signed the petition," said Levana Layendecker, director of Web communications for the American Friends Service Committee. The AFS's video "Wage Peace," which tied for the Best Call-to-Action video, poignantly portrays the casualties of the Iraq war. "We're continuing to show that there's a majority of people in this country and around the world who care about peace through our new website, Friends for Peace," added Layendecker.
The National Priorities Project, winner of the Most Popular Award for Most Innovative Advocacy Tool for their Cost of War counter, also heralds the impact of Web advocacy. "Our local cost of war numbers have been vital in national and community-based efforts to end the Iraq War," said Pamela Schwartz, communications director of NPP. "Without the Internet, this quick and ready access to how national policy impacts local communities would not be possible."
The panel of judges was: Christiane Baker, founder & president, Daily Bread Productions; Michele Demers, director of communications, Humanity United; Paul Edge, CEO, TOL23 Design; Mark Edmiston, managing director, AdMedia Partners; Cheryl Everette, vice president, Progressive Source Communications; Nelson R. Gonzalez, managing director, Advent Strategy Group; Jonathan Greenberg, CEO, Progressive Source Communications; Lee-Sean Huang, multimedia producer, Avaaz.org; Dean Jansen, special projects, Participatory Culture Foundation; Mark Karlin, founder & editor, buzzflash.com; Alice Markowitz, vice president of communications, Stonyfield Farm; and Linn Washington, journalism professor, Temple University.
