Free Online Tools Help People Prepare for Emergencies

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 18, 2008 -- One Economy Corporation, a global nonprofit, today announced the launch of Beehive's Emergency Preparedness content, new information and resources on handling a broad range of disasters and emergencies that are part of the Beehive (www.thebeehive.org), a multilingual self-help web portal. Today, only 7 percent of Americans have taken the recommended emergency preparedness actions and a mere 21 percent of American households have an emergency supply kit, according to the American Red Cross. Civic engagement and community preparedness depends on adequate individual emergency education. The Beehive's Emergencies section helps people prepare for and react to various emergency situations as different as tornados and outbreaks of the flu, especially in lower-income communities where emergency education is less available.

On the Beehive, users will find information about what to do before, during, and after specific types of emergencies and walk through emergency scenarios from hurricanes to utility failure to acts of terrorism. Multimedia tools such as video and animation make it easy for people, including low-literacy users, to learn about:

- Preparing for an emergency, including installing and testing alarms and detectors;

- What to do during an emergency, including evacuations;

- Creating a go bag; and

- Building a personal support network.
